Girl in a witch hat taking candy from a shopkeeper on a lakeside sidewalk at golden hour

AT A GLANCE
When: October 1-31, 2026 (biggest nights Oct. 23-31)
Where: Downtown Tahoe City
Cost: Mostly free; walking tours ask a $5 donation

Hauntober is Tahoe City's month-long Halloween celebration, running October 1-31, 2026 throughout downtown Tahoe City. The Tahoe City Downtown Association puts it on, with the North Tahoe Chamber listed as a sponsor, and the biggest nights land in the last week of October, from the Zombie Crawl on Oct. 23 to trick-or-treating on Oct. 30.

What Hauntober in Tahoe City Is Like

Hauntober feels like a small mountain town playing dress-up for a whole month. Late October brings crisp, clear days and cold nights by the lake, and downtown leans into the season with scarecrows and family-friendly Halloween displays. In the afternoons, families wander between shops chasing skeleton clues on their phones. After dark, the mood shifts. On Zombie Crawl night, people in costumes and zombie makeup walk a route through town, stopping at participating businesses for food and drink specials, live entertainment and a few spooky surprises along the way. Guided ghost walks dig into the town's old morgues, ghostly legends and eccentric local characters. The last weekend brings kids in costume collecting candy downtown, a haunted historic cabin and a late-night cult classic at the local cinema. It draws locals and visitors, toddlers and grown-ups, and nobody takes it too seriously.

Event Highlights

The Zombie Crawl on Friday, Oct. 23 is the headliner, and the Tahoe City Downtown Association hosts a Zombification Station and photo booth so you can get into character. Haunted Historic Walking Tours, led by Karen Willcuts of Mountain Town Walking Tours, start outside Sierra Surf Club in the historic Tahoe Inn, built in 1934. The Skeleton Scavenger Hunt is free and app-based: solve a clue, find the hidden skeleton, snap a photo and unlock the next clue until you have found all 12, which earns you an entry to win a prize. On Oct. 30, the Tahoe City Public Utility District's downtown trick-or-treat starts at Heritage Plaza, and the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society opens its free Watson Cabin Haunted House, now in its fifth year, at the same time.

2026 Schedule

Through Sat., Oct. 31: Skeleton Scavenger Hunt around downtown
Friday, Oct. 23: Zombie Crawl, 5-10 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 24: Haunted Historic Walking Tours at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 25: Haunted Historic Walking Tour at 3 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 30: Downtown Trick-or-Treat from Heritage Plaza and the Watson Cabin Haunted House, both 4-6 p.m.

Cost and What to Bring

Most of Hauntober is free. The Zombie Crawl and its event shuttle are free, so are trick-or-treating and the Watson Cabin Haunted House, and the scavenger hunt is free to join through its registration site, which sends you a verification code by text or email. The walking tours ask for a $5 non-refundable donation with advance registration on Eventbrite, and walk-ins only get in if there is room. Rocky Horror is a ticketed, R-rated screening, and costumes and props are encouraged. Bring a costume, a charged phone for the hunt and warm layers, since Tahoe City sits above 6,000 feet and October evenings cool off fast.

Parking and Getting There

For the Zombie Crawl, a free TART event shuttle runs throughout the evening between Olympic Valley, West Shore neighborhoods and the Tahoe City Transit Center. Shuttle times are approximate, so give yourself a little cushion. For daytime events, the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society points visitors to free parking at the Tahoe City Transit Center, just south of Fanny Bridge and across the street from the Gatekeeper's Museum. TART buses are free to ride, with Placer County extending free fares into late 2027, and once you are downtown, everything on the schedule is within walking distance along North Lake Boulevard.

Local tip: The haunted walking tours are designed for ages 12 and up and have limited space, so register on Eventbrite before you come. With younger kids, Oct. 30 is the sweet spot: trick-or-treat downtown, then walk over to the free Watson Cabin Haunted House, both running 4-6 p.m.
