Skier spraying deep powder through snow-loaded pine trees in low winter sun

AT A GLANCE
When: Friday, November 27, 2026 (targeted, conditions permitting)
Where: Sugar Bowl, Donner Summit (Norden), off I-80
Cost: Day ticket, Sugar Bowl season pass or Mountain Collective Pass

Sugar Bowl's targeted opening day for the 2026-27 season is Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving, conditions permitting. The independent ski area has been running on Donner Summit since 1939 and sits just west of Truckee, off I-80 at the Norden/Soda Springs exit.

What Sugar Bowl Opening Day Is Like

Sugar Bowl opening day feels like a Thanksgiving weekend tradition on the crest of the Sierra. Donner Summit catches storms early and averages about 500 inches of snow a year, and the mountain spreads 1,650 acres and 105 runs across four mountains: Judah, Lincoln, Disney and Crow's. Nearly half the terrain is rated advanced or expert, so opening day draws a crowd of regulars who know the steeps and are itching for first turns. Opening day only uses part of that, depending on how much natural snow and snowmaking the season has delivered, but the vibe is classic Sugar Bowl: independent, a little old-school and very much about the skiing. Summit elevation is 8,383 feet with 1,500 feet of vertical, which means cold mornings, crisp air and big views over the summit once the clouds clear.

Event Highlights

The 2026-27 season is a big one for Sugar Bowl. The resort is building a new Village Gondola, an eight-person Doppelmayr system replacing the historic four-person gondola, along with a renovation of the Main Lodge (formerly Judah Lodge) that reworks the arrival flow and adds a new beginner experience. Construction is targeted for completion in November 2026, but Sugar Bowl hasn't said whether the gondola will be running on opening day, so check the resort's updates before you plan around it. Beyond that, the highlight is simple: first chairs of the season on a holiday weekend, with 12 lifts and four terrain parks to look forward to as more of the mountain opens.

Tickets, Passes and What to Bring

Sugar Bowl isn't on the Epic or Ikon Pass. It sells its own season passes and is part of the Mountain Collective, which includes two days at Sugar Bowl with no blackout dates and half off additional days. Day tickets for 2026-27 went on sale in mid-October with demand-based pricing and a limited number sold each day. Online adult rates start at $89 Sunday-Friday and $114 on Saturdays and holidays, kids 6-12 start at $49, and kids 5 and under ski free with a ticket from the window. Adult window rates are $189 Sunday-Friday and $249 on Saturdays and holidays, so buy online before you go. Sugar Bowl also sells a separate $89 adult Midweek Lift Ticket, good Monday-Thursday on non-holiday dates and sold online only until November 26. Pack warm layers and goggles, since Donner Summit weather changes fast.

Parking and Getting There

From I-80, take Exit 174 for Norden/Soda Springs, head east on Highway 40 for 3.5 miles and turn right on Sugar Bowl Road. From Truckee, Donner Pass Road (Old 40) is the fastest route. The Main Lodge lots are free and first come, first served, with a free shuttle circling the main lot on weekends and holidays. The Upper Lot at Main Lodge is paid parking at $35 on weekends and holidays and can be reserved online, and carpools of four or more park there free while spots last. The Village Gondola lot is for season passholders only, and there's no overnight parking on resort property. Last season, the free Sugar Bowl / Donner Summit Shuttle linked Truckee with Donner Summit, with a timed transfer to TART's Truckee Local route at the Coldstream stop, and it does not run when Old 40 is closed. Its 2026-27 schedule hasn't been posted yet.

Local tip: Before you drive up, text "old40" to 855-835-5599 for Old 40 road status, and check Caltrans for I-80 chain controls. If Old 40 is closed, plan on I-80 and the Norden/Soda Springs exit instead.
